High school wrestling roundup: Calera wrestling falls to Thompson in program opener

The Calera High School wrestling team fell to Thompson it its first match in program history Dec. 2.

The Eagles lost to Thompson 75-3 in their first ever varsity match. Calera defeated Walker 36-30 for the program’s first win in the dual meet.

Freshman Coby Mize recorded the first individual win in school history with his 6-5 decision over Thompson’s Trey Berryhill in the 152-pound match.

Nine Thompson wrestlers recorded wins in the match.

The Warriors’ Anthony Clay pinned Brian McDonald of Calera in 103-pound action. Thompson 112-pounder Brandon Belser pinned Christian McDonald of Calera.

Thompson’s Hunter Gatlin picked up a 9-4 decision over Austin Dowdy of Calera in the 125-pound match. The Warriors’ Nick Lowe pinned Keenan Agee in the 130-pound match.

Jackson Adelberg of Thompson won by disqualification over Calera’s Jake Thomas in the 135-pound match. Thompson 140-pounder Jacob Mayhall pinned Shawn O’Neill of Calera in the 140-pound match.

Shane Evans of Thompson pinned Calera’s Cody Thomaston in 171-pound action. The Warriors’ David Capers pinned Kevin Murry of Calera in the 215-pound match.

Thompson heavyweight Jack Scott pinned Calera’s Danny Diaz.

Three Calera wrestlers earned wins in the match against Walker.

Brian McDonald pinned his Walker foe in the 103-pound match in 4:42. The Eagles’ Jarrett Seiger pinned his Walker opponent in 1:10 in the 119-pound match.

Jake Thomas of Calera pinned his Walker opponent in 1:38 in 135-pound action.

The Warriors also picked up a 75-6 win over Walker on Dec. 2.

Matthew Johnson, Cody McDanal, Matthew Gilson, Colt Jones, Luis Munoz, Mayhall, Brandon Morgen, Berryhill, Jonathan Berry, Evans, Pinneo, Capers and Scott each picked up wins in the match. against the Vikings.

Jaguars defeat Homewood

The Spain Park High School wrestling squad defeated Homewood 34-28 in a dual match Dec. 2.

Kameron Ricks continued his undefeated string with a 12 second pin of Homewood’s John Gooden in the 215-pound match.  The dual was decided in the final match when Spain Park heavyweight Emmanuel Cooper pinned the Patriots’ Zach Sims to seal the victory.

Spain Park 125-pounder Andres Galinde pinned Homewood’s Noah Sanders in 1:54. The Jaguars’ Blake Daniel earned a 16-2 major decision over Zach Robinson of Homewood in the 171-pound match.

Spain Park 171-pounder Alec Hudson of Spain Park earned a pin in five minutes in a match against the Patriots’ Lakeith Walker in an exhibition match.
