A Shelby County corrections officer resigned Nov. 2 after the Shelby County Sheriff’s office investigated a complaint against them by an inmate.
According to the sheriff’s office, they received the complaint Oct. 19 in which the inmate alleged the corrections officer violated jail policies and procedures during their booking process. An administrative investigation was opened immediately and it was discovered the inmate’s complaint was founded in part.
The corrections officer voluntarily resigned while the administrative investigation was still ongoing.
Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry accepted the resignation but requested the Alabama Bureau of Investigation conduct a criminal investigation into the matter.
“The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office treats every complaint seriously and we investigate every one we receive,” Curry said. “Our complaint policy worked as it should have in this matter. We asked the ABI to see if criminal charges are warranted. We will provide them with anything and everything they request to help them make that determination.”
