Montevallo resident Joseph Lee Elder, who was born June 27, 1925, in Bourbon County, Kan., passed away Sept. 30, 2010. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at University Baptist Church in Montevallo. Dr. Robin Norsworthy and Rev. Darryl Kiehl will officiate.
Before moving to Montevallo, Mr. Elder lived in Ottawa, Kan. Prior to moving to Ottawa, the family lived in Boaz. While in Boaz he was active in the Choccolocco Council of the Boy Scouts of America and was a Council Commissioner and recipient of the Wood Badge recognition and the Silver Beaver Award.
Mr. Elder was a member of Boaz First Baptist Church and was past president of the Boaz Chamber of Commerce. He was moderator for First Baptist Church in Ottawa, Kan., and was a deacon at University Baptist Church in Montevallo.
He was employed by H.D. Lee Co. from 1947-1978 in Kansas City, Kan.; Ottawa, Kan.; Chetopa, Kan.; and Boaz. He later owned and operated garment-manufacturing plants in Garnett and Burlingame, Kan., and he ran those companies from 1978 until his retirement.
Mr. Elder is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia McElroy Elder; daughters, Mary Lou Elder Williams (Joe) and Lea Ann Elder Webb (Jim); grandchildren, Beth Williams House (Mike), Scottie Williams English (Phillip) and Holder Nevins (Kendra); step-grandchildren Joe Webb (Laura) and Robin Webb Sweeney (Gerald); great-grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth House and Harper Nevins; and his brother, Jesse Elder (Lula) of Port Angeles, Wash.
