Montevallo hosting summer walks

The Montevallo Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring several summer walks designed to showcase the city’s historical districts, schools and neighborhoods.
The walking tours will depart from the chamber at 720 Oak St. every Saturday in June at 10 a.m.
Each tour will focus on a different section of the city, and will all be at a casual pace along the city’s sidewalks.
The first walk will take place June 5, and will focus on the University of Montevallo Historic District. During the June 5 tour, a guide will explain the history behind the university campus and the homes adjoining the campus.
Carolyn Kirby will lead the June 12 tour, which will be titled “Fitness with a Furry Friend.”
Walk participants will be encouraged to bring their leashed, well-mannered canine companions on the June 12 walk while Kirby explains how pet owners can exercise while spending time with their dogs throughout the summer.
On June 19, Linda Cicero will lead a tour titled “Backyard Birding,” which will focus on the different types of birds in Montevallo.
The final walking tour will take place June 26, and will be called a “Taste of Montevallo,” walk featuring the city’s eateries.
Last year, more than 80 walkers participated in some of the walks, according to an e-mail from Montevallo Chamber of Commerce President Mary Lou Williams.
“The pace for the walks takes into consideration that June mornings are warm in Montevallo,” Williams wrote in the e-mail. “And since the sidewalks in town and on the University of Montevallo are used, the walks are moderately accessible.”
