Pelham girls advance to state tennis tournament

The Pelham High School girls’ tennis team qualified for the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A state tournament after finishing second at a Class 6A sectional April 19 in Tuscaloosa.
All six Pelham singles’ players and all three doubles’ teams advanced to the sectional finals. The Panthers finished with 44 points, which was 14 points behind section winner Northridge.
Sidney Garner claimed the No. 4 singles’ title after defeating Alison Fridley of Northridge 6-1, 6-3 in the final.
Lauren Davis fell to Northridge’s Katie Walker 6-3,6-3 in the No. 1 singles’ final. Nora Alcaino fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles’ final to Manai Kamal of Northridge.
Samantha Travis dropped the No. 3 singles’ final 7-5, 6-1 to Margaret Ann Dyson of Northridge. Katie Foley fell 6-2, 7-5 to Northridge’s Carly Cignetti.
Kara Speegle fell to Kaitlyn Stuart of Northridge 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 6 singles’ final.
Davis and Travis fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to Walker and Kamal of Northridge in the No. 1 doubles’ final. Foley and Callen Young dropped the No. 3 doubles’ final 7-5, 6-3 to Sara Horton and Morgan Carey of Northridge.
The No. 2 doubles’ final has been postponed to Sunday due to rain.
