Blalock to take over Thompson High construction project

The Thompson High School classroom addition project will be completed by a new construction company.
At a special called meeting March 26, the Shelby County Board of Education approved a “takeover agreement” that will allow Blalock Construction Co. of Birmingham to finish the project. McCrory Construction was previously heading up the project, according to Shelby County Schools spokesperson Cindy Warner.
The takeover agreement allows Travelers Casualty and Surety Co., the bonding company that insures the project, to take over the project and give it to Blalock Construction.
Much of the work for the $3.9 million project is complete, Warner said.
The high school cafeteria has been expanded, and a fieldhouse has been converted into 11 classrooms.
“We’re already utilizing those spaces,” Warner said.
The next part of the project involves the addition of 12 classrooms.
Warner said Blalock Construction was already close to the project.
“We have subcontractors out there working on the project because it was so close to completion, and those subcontractors have continued,” Warner said. “Blalock was already one of the subcontractors that was working on the project and will continue.”
Warner said the board expects the project to be completed by the end of May.
Warner could not confirm why Travelers Casualty and Surety chose to take over the project.
