Luther Vernon, Sr.

Luther Vernon, Sr., 83, loving father and faithful husband left this mortal world to join his departed soul mate in their heavenly home on Friday, October 30 with family and friends by his side.
Mr. Vernon was a WWII veteran who marched through France, Italy and Germany with the 35th Infantry Division.
His family honored that service with a memorial brick in Veterans’ Park.
Mr. Vernon was a lifetime resident of Shelby Co. (Alabaster), except for a few years when the family lived in Pana, IL. He was a member of New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He taught his children the value of honestly, integrity and good job ethics. He worked from approximately age 15 until his retirement in 1991 for Allied Products (originally Alabaster Lime Co.) After his retirement, he returned to work for several years with Mr. M A (Mac) Rikard (former owner of Allied Products).
He will be remembered for his loving attitude and his willingness to share with others of his blessings.
Mr. Vernon was preceded in death by his soul mate wife of 64 years, Minnie F. Vernon; their daughter Frances Vernon Bailey; his sister, Bobbie Sue Blankenship and brother Clarence L. Vernon.
He is survived by his sons Luther J. (Linda) Vernon and Jimmy Vernon; son-in-law Donald Bailey; daughters Rosemary (Charles) Augur, Jessie (Dale) Dunnaway, and Beth (Stanley) Burnett; sister-in-law Ruth E. Smith; sisters Joan Allen, and Shirley (James) Cordes; brothers John R. (Judy) Vernon and Albert Vernon; seven grandchildren and twenty great -grandchildren, (who lovingly called him Big Papa); many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday Night, November 02 from 6-8pm for friends at Rockco’s Chapel. The funeral service will be held in the Chapel on Tuesday, November 03 at 11am, with burial to follow in Shelby Memory Gardens. Reverend Donny Acton officiating with Reverend Sherrlyn Frost, Reverend Mindy Acton and Reverend Mark Davis assisting.
