Families and individuals considering a summer staycation need not go further than Montevallo, one of 30 towns statewide participating in the Alabama Department of Tourism and Travel’s June Walking Tours.

The Montevallo Chamber of Commerce will host free guided walking tours each Saturday morning in June, said Chamber President Mary Lou Williams.

“We are the only town in Shelby County offering the walking tours,” Williams said. “It’s a little vacation pretty much at home, and you won’t have to drive nearly as far.”

All tours begin at 10 a.m. at the Chamber of Commerce, 720 Oak St. Williams recommends guests wear comfortable shoes and dress for warm weather.

The first tour, titled Memories of Main Street, will be June 6. Childhood friends and lifelong Montevallo residents Gene Lightfoot and Laurie Binion will guide guests through downtown and share memories of Montevallo life during the 1940s and 1950s. Binion, an artist, will also distribute souvenir tour maps she has illustrated highlighting stops along the route.

Other walking tours include:

A Garden, A Mural and an Ice Cream Cone. University of Montevallo art historian Kelly Wacker will lead guests through her historic home’s garden and explain the significance of the mural at the Montevallo Post Office. The tour ends with a visit to the old-fashioned ice cream parlor, The Dish and The Spoon. June 13.

Three Historic Churches. Guides will welcome guests to Montevallo United Methodist Church, Montevallo Presbyterian Church and Montevallo First Baptist Church. June 20.

Calkins, Palmer, Bloch and King: When They Were People Instead of Buildings. Guests will visit buildings named for prominent figures at the University of Montevallo. June 27.

For active guests

Williams said guests who would rather take a brisk walk or run through town are invited to use the city’s new parks trail, a 1.9-mile route connecting Orr Park and Stephens Park. Trail maps are available at the Chamber of Commerce.
