Cornerstone Christian avenged last year’s playoff opening round loses with a sweep at South Choctaw Friday, 3-2 and 11-1.
South Choctaw took a 2-0 lead in the first game, before the Chargers cut the lead in half in the sixth and took the lead in the top of the seventh with a two-run single by Trey Benson. The Rebels put runners on bases in the bottom of the seventh, but a deep fly ball to right center, followed by a play at the plate and strikeout, left the Rebels in a must-win situation for the nightcap.
In the second game, Cornerstone held a 4-1 lead before senior Josh Dunnaway hit a three-run home run to left to bust the game open, 7-1. Patrick Shaw followed with a two-run single in the fifth and the Chargers tacked on two more runs in the sixth to end the game early by 10 runs.
Lance Benton and Dunnaway tossed complete games to win the two games for the Chargers.
CCS (21-3) will travel to in-county rival Coosa Valley Academy for the state semifinal Wednesday
