The Calera City Council has unanimously approved personnel restructuring at the Calera Police Department.
A sergeant’s and two captain’s positions were eliminated to create an officer and deputy chief of police position, which saves the department about $21,000, said Police Chief Sean Lemley. The restructuring is in response to the city’s budget constraints.
Lemley said the restructuring allows an additional person to patrol the city’s streets.

Council members also authorized the police department to purchase two used patrol cars valued at $16,800. A $9,000 insurance claim and a $7,255 police training reimbursement will cover the majority of the cost.
