University offering fitness classes

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is easier said than done, which is why the University of Montevallo Department of Continuing Education is giving a gentle nudge of encouragement.

The department is offering four physical fitness classes during the spring semester, said Christy Bratton, UM continuing education manager. The classes include yoga, water aerobics and weight training, and all are open to the public.

Bratton hopes freshly-made New Year’s resolutions will boost participation. Enrollment fees range from $70 to $110. People age 65 and older receive a discount.

The classes, suited for all fitness levels, are the only offerings from continuing education. Bratton said the department previously offered digital photography and computer classes, “but not enough people signed up.”

Bratton said 10 to 30 people have signed up for each class. People interested in enrolling may take a complimentary class to determine whether the class meets their needs.

Water aerobics and weight training begins this month at the McChesney Student Activity Center, while yoga will be held at Bibb Graves Dance Studio.

Bratton said people may enroll anytime during the semester, and the enrollment fee will be prorated.
