Nick Schoggen, a Fourmile volunteer firefighter, is one of the first volunteer firefighters to complete the Alabama Fire College’s fire academy. Schoggen graduated the academy Oct. 17. The Alabama Fire College has revamped its criteria for recruit school, allowing volunteer fire departments and individuals to enroll in the academy without sponsorship from a career fire department. Fourmile Fire Chief Justin Glass said allowing volunteer firefighters to go through the academy would benefit the fire departments by bringing in newfound expertise and knowledge. The fire stations would also have improved I.S.O. ratings.
