Trinity Presbyterian poured on the points Friday, as it downed Montevallo, 44-16, in the final Class 3A, Region 4 game of the season.
Montevallo carried the ball 41 times in the game for 212 yards but managed to score only once against Trinity’s first-team defense. Trailing 10-0 late in the first quarter, Montevallo quarterback Kevin Callender busted loose on a 71-yard run, but the Bulldogs would not find the end zone again until the fourth quarter.
Trinity answered Callender’s touchdown with a 34-yard pass from Jack Poundstone to Josh Teel to go up 16-7 after the opening quarter. The Wildcats also scored on a 22-yard field goal by Andy Pappanastos and a 37-yard run by Alex Adams in the first quarter.
Adam and Teel both found the end zone again in the second quarter to give Trinity a 30-7 lead at the half.
Callender exited the game early in the second half due to injury. He had 123 yards rushing on 14 carries and was 0-of-4 passing in the game. Freshman Taylor Burr took over, completing 1-of-3 passes for 14 yards.
Teel didn’t let up in the third quarter, retuning a punt 85 yards for a touchdown. Trinity’s reserves went to work, as backup quarterback Josh Watkins connected on a 6-yard pass to Mark White before the end of the third quarter.
The Bulldog found points in the fourth with a safety on a snap that went out of bounds on a punt. Deonte Lilly later added a 3-yard touchdown run for the Bulldogs.
