Harding University swept the men’s and women’s Gulf South Conference Cross Country Championships Friday by taking the top five spots for the men and top three for the women.
The championship was moved to Veterans’ Park last season, making the University of Montevallo the home team for the meet. It was previously in New Market, Ala.
The University of Montevallo women’s cross country team posted its best performance in school history at the event, finishing seventh overall. Their previous best was eighth in 2006. Freshman Ginny Davis of Madison also matched Montevallo’s best individual finish with a 25th place showing.
Davis’ 20:26.64 was the eighth-fastest time in school history and was less than two minutes behind individual champion Esther Komen, who ran the 5K course in 18:53.81. The race was the fourth time this year that Davis ran a top-10 time in school history.
Sophomore January Waters of Grayson, Ga., was Montevallo’s second runner across the line finishing 32nd with a time of 20:54.68. Freshman Katherine Schofield of Snellville, Ga., finished seven spots behind with a 39th place showing.
Rounding out the scorers for UM were junior Katie Munkus of Trussville in 46th and Lindsey Golay of Sharpsburg, Ga., in 58th.
Two former Shelby County High School runners competed in the event. West Alabama’s Anne Enoch was 76th overall in the women’s race with at time of 23:30.93 and Aaron Bush, a freshman at North Alabama, was 59th in the men’s 8K race with a time of 30:16.04.
GSC teams will travel to the NCAA Region Meet, hosted by Harding in Searcy, Ark., Nov. 8.
