Martin Methodist soccer downs Montevallo

The Martin Methodist RedHawks men’s soccer team downed the University of Montevallo in Pulaski, Tenn., 4-2, on Sunday.
UM, ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II, dropped its second-straight game to an NAIA team. Auburn University-Montgomery knocked off the Falcons, 2-1, Thursday in UM’s season opener.
Milan Pualic scored the first goal for UM on Sunday off an assist by Jonathan Maloney, but Fernando Barbeiro answered for MMC off an assist by Tiago Reichert. Reichert added goals in the 71st and 88th minute, while Fernando Andrade scored the eventual game-winner in the 82nd minute. Maloney netted a penalty kick in the 85th minute, but UM was unable to overcome the attack from the RedHawks’ Brazilian forwards.
Montevallo goalkeeper Bryan Cartmell, who was playing less than 20 miles south of his home in Columbia, Tenn., had five saves in the loss.
UM (0-2) travels to Florida this week to take on Rollins College on Friday and Florida Southern on Sunday.
