Multiple assailants attacked a woman in Harpersville July 31, beating and raping her, said Police Chief David Latimer.

“I’m confident there was more than one, we just don’t know exactly how many,” Latimer said.

The woman was an adult. The police are also investigating exactly where the rape occurred. Harpersville police are working with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department as well as with a retired Birmingham detective who has volunteered to help with the investigation.

The victim is recovering slowly, Latimer said.

“She has been in and out of the hospital. She’s pretty traumatized. It was a pretty horrific assault,” Latimer said. “She’s much better, I understand.”
