Junior Am match play field set
Published 1:00 pm Wednesday, July 23, 2008
The 61st U.S. Junior Amateur is now anybody’s to claim as the top 64 golfers opened match play this afternoon.
After severe weather suspended play Tuesday, the second round of stroke play continued today with leader Jorge Fernandez Valdes falling to 5-under par after shooting 7-under in round one. He was able to hold off Cory Gribble of Dallas, Texas to earn medalist honors with a two-day score of 139 and take the top seed into match play.
Defending champion Cory Whitsett is ready for his chance to become the first junior to win back-to-back Junior Ams since Tiger Woods won three from 1991-93.
“It’s like a new golf tournament now,” Whitsett said in a tournament release.
Whitsett, who shot a 143 through two rounds of stroke play, is considered by many to be the favorite for match play.
Play continued this afternoon with match play beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Two local golfers, Bobby Wyatt of Mobile and Tom Lovelady of Mountain Brook, made the cut.
