Just as the city of Calera continues to grow, so does its youth football championships. Three Calera youth teams captured Chilton County Youth Football League championships Nov. 12.
“We’ve got a real strong program in Calera now,” said Calera football president Eddie Posey. “We have a lot of people moving in, and we’ve seen our numbers grown substantially.”
Posey’s Minor team shut out Clanton Orange, 14-0, with the help of quarterback Cody Thompson. Thompson tossed a touchdown pass to Justin Gibson and ran in
another. It was the Minors’ second title in two years.
The Calera Mites moved to 20-0, since starting the age level last year, as they won their second-straight title with a 22-6 win over West Blocton. Tyler Ray, O.J. Harris and Cody Freedman all ran for touchdowns.
The Calera Midgets also brought home a title, bouncing back from falling short in the playoffs last season, to beat Montevallo 14-6. Kevin Dowdell and Jonathon Brown helped lead the way.
A fourth team, the Calera Majors, went undefeated through the season, but were unable to top Clanton Orange, falling 34-20
