The Pelham Panthers are on an emotional rollercoaster.
One week after defeating Tuscaloosa County on Oct. 27 to win the Class 6A, Region 5 title, the Panther suffered their second loss of the season Friday night at the hands of the Vestavia Hills Rebels, 27-0.
The loss ended the Panthers&8217; eight-game win streak, but the non-region game meant little to the Panthers&8217; playoff picture.
Pelham (8-2) will host Bob Jones (5-5) this Friday in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.
The Panthers&8217; shutout loss to Vestavia came by the way of turnovers and a tough Rebels&8217; defense.
PHS was held to a total of 255 yards of offense in the game, turning the ball over twice.
Pelham standout quarterback Josh Thomason was 27-of-41 for 183 yards through the air, but gave up two uncharacteristic interceptions in the loss.
Pelham stalled on three lengthy drives inside Rebels&8217; territory and hurt their chances even more with 95 yards lost on nine penalties.
&8220;We just didn&8217;t get things done on either side of the ball,&8221; Pelham head coach Brett Burnette said. &8220;We had way to many mistakes and penalties and that proved costly.&8221;
Pelham finished the game with 14 first downs, two more than the Rebels, and out-passed Vestavia by 94 yards.
&8220;This isn&8217;t the way we play football,&8221; Burnett said. &8220;And we&8217;re going to be in trouble next week if we don&8217;t get better.
The Rebels&8217; Justin Rogers shredded Pelham&8217;s defense in the game, running for 163 yards on 20 carries with three scores.
