More than 40 Montevallo residents turned out last Tuesday to give their opinions on the city&8217;s comprehensive plan.
The public involvement meeting was cosponsored by the city and the Shelby County Department of Development Services, which is contracted to help Montevallo reevaluate its planning.
David Hunke, planning services supervisor, asked residents to help his office learn more about what locals think about Montevallo. Residents broke off into groups and labeled landmarks and destinations, as well as best kept secrets and &8220;diamonds in the rough,&8221; places that could be great with just a little work.
County officials also reviewed what residents said they liked and disliked about Montevallo from earlier public involvement meetings.
Kristine Goddard, a long-range planner with the county, said Montevallo residents identified the University of Montevallo, the American Village and the city&8217;s park system and new library as strengths, while labeling minimal ordinance enforcement and a lack of housing diversity as weaknesses.
Goddard also reviewed what residents said were Montevallo&8217;s greatest opportunities (like tourism development) and biggest threats (including unplanned growth).
The city and county will sponsor more public involvement hearings later this fall.
