Pelham and Montevallo High Schools came away with the Northern and Southern Division titles this weekend at the Shelby County Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Briarwood Christian School.
The win by 6A Pelham may not have come as a surprise as Tammy Richardson&8217;s team is number one in its area, but 3A Montevallo has not won a county title in volleyball since the 1970&8217;s.
Richardson said of her team&8217;s title win over host 5A Briarwood,
&8220;Even though Briarwood had one of their top guns out (Leah Scroggins) they are still a very solid team.&8221;
Tournament standouts for Pelham included Whitney Billings, Shea McBee, Whitney Hudson and Liz Lee.
Pelham&8217;s record was 39-10 at press time.
Montevallo coach Tena Niven said of her team, &8220;We are just finally catching on now. We&8217;ve started slow, but we are really catching on fire here at the end. This is when it counts.&8221;
She said her squad was 8-13 at press time and undefeated in the area.
&8220;I&8217;m just tickled to death for them. This is special,&8221; said Niven.
To win the Northern Title Pelham defeated Oak Mountain 25-14 and 15-15 and then defeated Briarwood in the finals 20-25, 25-17 and 15-9.
