U.S. 280 projects set to begin

Transportation officials have a number of projects in the works for one of Alabama&8217;s busiest highways.
The improvements planned fort the U.S. 280 corridor span from the Interstate 459 intersection to Eagle Point Parkway in Inverness.
The projects include widening the road to eight lanes and working out a new access management plan.
The Alabama Department of Transportation will hold off on some of the plans, however, pending the completion of the Progress 280 group study on an elevated roadway for the highway.
Currently, ALDOT has the following plans for the highway set to begin in the next few years:
u A flyover ramp from U.S. 280 westbound to I-459 southbound. The ramp project is ready to begin, ALDOT officials say, but is awaiting the completion of the elevated roadway feasibility study.
u Widening U.S. 280 from I-459 to Valleydale road to eight lanes. This plan will include a number of access management improvements along the roadway. Scheduled date for beginning construction is early 2009.
