A field goal in the bank traded for a chance to score a touchdown in overtime proved to be Oak Mountain&8217;s undoing last Friday night.
Visiting Fairfield connected on a 20-yard field goal in overtime to down Oak Mountain 15-12.
But that was the fatal shot. The setup came earlier.
Oak Mountain&8217;s Ben Phillips made a 20-yard field goal in overtime to put the Eagles ahead of Fairfield. But Oak Mountain decided to take a kicker call against the visitors for a chance to score from the 2-yard line.
The visitors held and Phillips had a chance to make one of the shortest possible field goals in football &045; a one yard field goal.
This time, however, the kick was no good and Oak Mountain&8217;s hopes for victory died with Fairfield making their own 20-yard effort.
Oak Mountain scored on a 12-yard pass from Richie Fordham to Michael Connell and a 6-yard run by Nick Anderson.
On the night Anderson had 17 carries for 59 yards for Oak Mountain and one touchdown.
Fordham was 7 of 12 in passing for 82 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Oak Mountain rushed 43 times for 162 yards to 34 times for 117 yards for Fairfield.
The Eagles passed for 82 yards to 32 for Fairfield, which gave the Eagles an edge in total yards, 244-149.
Both teams were penalized for 40 yards and neither team lost a fumble
