Westover hearing becomes shouting match

A heated Westover Planning Commission public hearing on the preliminary plan for Westover Park was delayed until late July.
No action was taken at the meeting after developers were granted a continuance, which drew the ire of the standing room only crowd of protestors.
The scene turned into a shouting match between Chairman Michael Sampsell, who tried to keep order, and audience members, who cried out &8220;You ought to be ashamed of the job you&8217;re doing,&8221; &8220;You&8217;re out of line,&8221; and &8220;We&8217;ll be back.&8221;
Sampsell allowed four speakers who were already on the agenda to present petitions, all of which addressed growth and town zoning ordinances.
&8220;This is a reflection of what is happening all over the South,&8221; said Sara Alvarez Pfister. &8220;We are having an invasion. The unchecked development in other parts of the USA has brought ruin and they want to do the same here.&8221;
However, Westover Mayor Mark McLaughlin says he has not received a single complaint from a Westover resident. &8220;I haven&8217;t heard the first complaint from a citizen &8212;they have all been residents of other towns or live in the county,&8221; said McLaughlin.
The planning commission&8217;s public hearing will reconvene Tuesday, July 25 at 7 p.m. at Westover Town Hall.
