Christopher J. Roy was more than remembered in Calera on Saturday, he was celebrated.

Fire Station No. 2, which now stands as a monument to the memory of the fallen Calera fireman, was dedicated June 10, his birthday.

Members of the Calera Fire & Rescue Department and the community gathered on George Roy Parkway to officially dedicate the Christopher J. Roy Building.

The late fireman and EMT was killed on Nov. 28, 2005 in an accident on the way to a fire. A tractor-trailer truck pulled in front of the fire truck.

Chris Roy was the grandson of Calera Mayor Gorge Roy and the son of J.R. and Joyce Roy.

Calera Fire Chief Tommy Moon said when he found out his Chris&8217; mother was going to hold a memorial at the cemetery the same day he wanted to do the dedication, he asked Chris&8217; mother and she gave the okay.

&8220;It&8217;s great that his fellow firemen chose to do this in memory of Chris … something that will be here from now on,&8221; said Mayor George Roy. He noted that a lot of things just go by in a matter of time.

Mayor Roy said his grandson was not with the fire department when the station now named in his honor was built. But Chris did a lot of the plumbing and electrical work on the building as a member of the public works department.

During the dedication Mayor Roy said, it was both &8220;a sad day&8221; and &8220;a good day.&8221; &8220;A sad day because Chris is not here, a good day because this building is dedicated in his memory.&8221;

Moon said, &8220;Chris was a fair-sized man.&8221; And he noted of Fire Station No. 2, &8220;This is a big building.&8221;

Moon said of Chris, &8220;He build a good part of this building. He is here 24-7.&8221; And he asked,&8221; What bigger birthday gift can you give?&8221;

Moon said he kept Chris&8217; accountability bracelet with him every day. He also said, &8220;Just before the accident Chris gave the thumbs up. &8220;That mean to me Chris knew everything would be okay and it is,&8221; he said.

Moon said a Bible verse also made him think of Chris. Joshua 1-9, &8220;I command you be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.&8221;

Joyce Roy, Chris&8217; mother said, &8220;We are honored that the fire department would dedicate this building to Chris. We are very proud of Chris, this fire department and this community. And the prayers of this community for our family is appreciated.&8221;

J. R. Roy, father of the fallen fireman said, &8220;I feel like this is a happy occasion dedicating this building. I really want to thank everyone for coming out and participating with us.&8221;

He said of Chris, &8220;He wouldn&8217;t want us to be said. We&8217;re going to his land to have a birthday party for him.&8221;
