County residents will soon see work begin on the county&8217;s latest building projects.
The commission granted bids Monday to make this happen.
Receiving the bid for demolition of the old jail site was Tomlin Excavating & Demolition at $86,125.
County manager Alex Dudchock told commissioners recently that the side panels of the old jail have already been removed.
More than 950 tons of concrete were removed, leaving only the &8220;skeletal remains&8221; of that building.
&8220;The demolition will take the building down to the slab,&8221; Dudchock said.
Earlier plans for a three-story county services building to be located on the site were nixed in favor of a one-story structure with parking.
Dudchock said the 8,500-square-foot facility will feature two operating units, the license office and a driver&8217;s license testing site operated by the state of Alabama.
Rising construction costs and a more indepth look at the site forced the change from the three-story plan to two one-story facilities.
Other bids received for the demolition of the former jail building include ALR Procurement ($281,018) and D.H. Griffin Wrecking Co. ($98,855).
A second one-story facility will be located on McDow Road in front of Adult Work Release.
This facility will serve as a county warehouse and archives/storage site.
The structure will also house facilities and the county shop. Dudchock said the bid date for this second one-story structure is set for April or May.
The commission also granted a bid for a new equipment shed for the Shelby County Highway Department.
Lynn Clowers Construction Co. received the bid for $105,000.
Other bids received were: Wayne Davis Construction LLC for $116,100; M.J. Brooks & Son for $119,000; Splawn Construction Co. Inc. for $132,600; Metro D Construction LLC for $140,687; and Sun Building Company for $185,740.
The commission also awarded bids for the following:
