Old time treat – County kids enjoy Rickwood Classic

Last week, North Shelby residents David Aizenman and Sean O’Malley decided to take their sons to the annual Rickwood Classic to show them the baseball history Birmingham has to offer.
They couldn’t have picked a nicer day.
While the hometown Barons, wearing throwback Sloss Industries’ uniforms, were defeated by the visiting Huntsville Stars, also wearing throwback U.S. Steel uniforms, both Aizenman and O’Malley felt their sons needed to see this classic game.
&uot; This is what it’s about: summer and baseball,&uot; Aizenman said.
Even though Aizenman’s son, Aaron, who plays baseball for the Hoover East 8-year-old division All-stars would be playing O’Malley’s son, Jack, who plays baseball for the Oak Mountain 8-year-old All-stars, in just a few days, neither seemed to care as they appeared awestruck by the historic field.
&uot;It is a shame that we have such a landmark that only sees one pro game a year,&uot;Aizenman said.
&uot;We should play here more often.
