A pesky bunch of Yellow Jackets from Vincent paid a call to the Shelby County Wildcats last Friday night but received a cool reception as the Region 5, Class 4A Wildcats celebrated homecoming with a 42-19 win over their shell-shocked Region 6, Class 2A visitors.
Shelby County jumped out to a 21-6 lead in the first quarter and coasted to victory leading 35-13 at the half.
&uot;We were able to play all of our players and this greatly helps us with team moral and attitude,&uot; said SCHS head football coach Geoff Walters.
The Wildcats got things started when Dane Vansant scored on a 1-yard run, and Eric Hernandez added the point after. Next, Maurice Whiting scored on a 7-yard run. And once again,
&uot;Mr. Automatic&uot; Hernandez added the PAT.
But the Wildcats were not through dousing water on the Yellow Jackets in the first quarter. Montez Carter scored from 1-yard out, and Hernandez made it 21-0.
Coach Dwight Spradley’s Yellow Jackets weren’t ready to go to a &uot;watery grave&uot; just yet, however, as the determined visitors would get in a sting of their own.
Desmond Yowe would score on a 2-yard run, and Steven Adams would add the PAT to make it 21-7 in favor of SCHS at the end of the first quarter.
But the Wildcats would not rest on their laurels.
The Wildcats’ Derek Harris scored on a 2-yard pass from Vansant, and Xavier Scott
would scored on a 2-yard run. Hernandez made both PATs, and the Wildcats led 35-7.
Yowe would answer for VHS on a 2-yard run, but the PAT failed to make 35-13 at the halfway point.
After a scoreless third period, Shelby County extended its lead in the fourth on a 7-yard Harris run. Hernandez added the PAT, and the Wildcats went up 42-13.
But the Yellow Jackets would provide the final offensive thrill of the night when Darnell Kelley scored on a 6-yard run. The point after failed, and the final score stood 42-19.
The Yellow Jackets made one more first down than the Wildcats, 17-16, and gained more through the air, 61 yards to 29 yards, but the home team gained 238 yards on the ground for 267 total yards to just 93 yards on the ground and 154 yards total offense for Vincent.
Turnovers were almost even with the Wildcats losing two for of three fumbles and the Yellow Jackets losing three of four fumbles. Shelby County suffered one interception as well.
While the Wildcats punted but once to three times for the Yellow Jackets, SCHS was penalized 11 times for 120 yards to five times and 40 yards for the visitors.
Jeremy Goff had four tackles and one assist while Terrence Cotton had four tackles to lead in defensive stats. LaRico Crumpton, Jonathan Muse, Derek Harris, and Montez Carter all made tackles behind the line.
&uot;I thought we played well. I thought our starters went out and took care of business. We’re real proud of that,&uot; Walter said.
He said the Wildcats move back into region play against Corner on the road Friday night at 7 p.m. Walters said of Corner, they will be &uot;a real big challenge for us. They’ve got a really good team. They’re really racking up yards, scoring a lot of points and so we’re looking forward to this game.&uot;
