Four area wrestlers placed in the top five at the AHSAA state wrestling tournament held at the Pelham Civic Complex last Friday and Saturday.

Ben Johnson of Pelham High School and Clay Dykes of Oak mountain High School finished as state runners-up in the respective weight divisions. Both Johnson and Dykes missed a state title by a single point.

Johnson lost to Jay Pratt of Grissom 4-3 in the 171-pound division and Dykes fell to Lawrence Jordan of Jeff Davis 3-2 in the 189-pound class.

Pelham finished the tournament in ninth place with 30 points in team competition in Class 6A. Oak Mountain finished in 12th place with 24 points. Hoover claimed the overall title with 172.5. Other notables were Vestavia Hills in third place (91 points) and Spain Park in fourth place (86 points).

For the Panthers, Taylor McIntosh lost in the the semi-finals and claimed third place in the 130-pound weight class and Tyler Burger finished in fourth place in the 119-pound division. Burger lost in the consolation finals 6-2 to Will Stansfield of Mountain Brook.

Pelham head wrestling coach Bob Parker got the 100th win of his career at Pelham High.
