Cornerstone Christian School traveled to Chambers Academy last Tuesday for its latest area game.

It was a good night for both squads, as the boys and girls each notched another area win.

&uot;Our high-pressure defense gave them a lot of trouble,&uot; said varsity girls head coach Tim Smith. &uot;Of course, it helps when one of our players is really hot offensively.&uot;

Smith was referring to senior Chesley Hall’s 27-point performance, which included a 12-point first quarter, after which Cornerstone led 15-6. The Lady Chargers

then took a 24-13 lead into the locker room at the half.

They were forced to slow down and play more deliberately when senior guard Allison Youngblood was sidelined for much of the second half with a shoulder injury.

Although the Lady Chargers led by 18 at one point, the slower pace allowed Chambers back in the game and the starters had to return to seal a 38-26 victory.

The Lady Chargers are now 7-9 overall and 2-3 in area play.

The varsity boys took the floor in the same style.

&uot;We knew coming in that Chambers had trouble with pressure defense, and we always try to play our opponent’s weakness,&uot; said head coach Jay Adams.

&uot;It’s a good thing we played well defensively, because with Robert (McLeroy, junior center) out sick and three more fighting sickness, it was tough to find an offensive rhythm.&uot;

Still, the Chargers led 13-2 after the first period and 23-9 at the half, largely due to the interior defense and rebounding of Micah Whitson and Ben Lee and the shooting of freshman Ty Youngblood.

In the second half, the Chargers extended their lead to 20, closing the third quarter up 38-18.

The game ended much the same way, with Cornerstone winning 50-24 behind Youngblood’s 21-point performance, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

No other player broke double figures, with three players tied with 8 points.

Cornerstone improves its record to 7-9 overall and 2-3 in the area.
