County tourney under way

Nine county schools are currently converged on Pelham High School vying for a championship in the Shelby County basketball tournament.
Crowns will be given for girls and boys for the tournament, which got under way Tuesday night when the Vincent girls squared off against Chelsea and the Vincent boys played Pelham.
The tournament will continue through Saturday night when both boys and girls champions will be decided.
The schedule of games are as follows:
Varsity boys
Wednesday: (Vincent-Pelham winner) vs. Oak Mountain, 2 p.m.; Chelsea vs. Calera, 4 p.m. Thursday: Briarwood vs. Shelby County, 6 p.m.; Thompson vs. Montevallo, 8 p.m. Friday: semi-finals, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday: finals, 8 p.m.
Varsity girls
Wednesday: (Vincent-Chelsea winner) vs. Thompson, 8 p.m.; Montevallo vs. Pelham, 6 p.m. Thursday: Shelby County vs. Oak Mountain, 2 p.m.; Briarwood vs. Calera, 4 p.m. Friday: semi-finals, 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday: finals, 6 p.m.
The teams were seeded based on random draw before the beginning of the tournament. The seeds are as follows:
Varsity boys
(9) Pelham; (8) Vincent; (7) Chelsea; (6) Briarwood; (5) Thompson; (4) Montevallo; (3) Shelby County; (2) Calera; (1) Oak Mountain.
Varsity Girls
(9) Chelsea; (8) Vincent; (7) Montevallo; (6) Shelby County; (5) Briarwood; (4) Calera; (3) Oak Mountain; (2) Pelham; (1) Thompson.
Last year, the Briarwood Christian School Lions won the boys tournament, defeating Calera in the finals. Briarwood’s Tim Castille was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.
In girls action a year ago, Pelham defeated Briarwood in the championship game with Michelle Daughtery named the tournament MVP
