Pass drug tests to benefit from welfare
Published Tuesday, May 12, 2009
If you counted up all the money paid out by our federal government to individuals for food stamps and welfare, it would total hundreds of millions of dollars. Everyone on welfare goes through an application process and they do have to be approved, just as those of us who apply for jobs.
The difference, however, is that no questions are asked about whether these individuals use drugs. There is no test. This is where I feel there is a problem.
When I was job searching recently, I had to give prospective employers urine samples. I have no problem with this exercise because I know it protects employers, potential employees and other employees.
Employees pay taxes out of each paycheck, which go towards helping individuals who may be having a difficult time and need help getting back on their feet.
However, there are a lot of individuals that are on welfare for life. If these same people were told they have to pass a drug screening test, just like those of us that work, how many could pass?
I’m sure there are a lot of people that would pass a drug test with no problem. On the other hand, I feel there would be just as many that would not pass.
That being said, isn’t it only fair that the individuals that receive help from government agencies be asked to do the same as the working force? Pass the drug screen and you will continue to receive help. Fail it and you are on your own.

i agree with you 100% if only our government would make this law. but the truth is our lawmakers would be called racisist if they attempted to do something of this nature.they should also only pay benefits on 2 children born out of wedlock. and the mother should not be allowed to let her current welfare stud stay in govt. provided housing for free.

I would gladly take a drug test of any kind to receive benefits I am unemployed served in the miltary 12 years worked all my life and was told because I am single I can only receive foodstamps in Shelby County for 3 months. It should be some accountability.
