It was Valentine’s Day, and Ashley Deaton McMakin decided to prepare a home-cooked meal for two special people in her life — her parents. But if you know McMakin, you also know that such a gesture is the norm.

“It was their anniversary,” said McMakin, 34, owner of Ashley Mac’s Cafe, Catering and Gourmet To Go. “Cooking is definitely a natural passion I’ve always had. I even cooked for my friends in high school and college.”

McMakin and her husband, Andy, recently celebrated the two-year anniversary of Ashley Mac’s Inverness location off Valleydale Road. Ashley Mac’s also has locations in Bluff Park and Cahaba Heights. In January, the McMakins decided to extend the hours at their Inverness location to accommodate working — and hungry — families. New hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
