First-year Spain Park High School football coach Chip Lindsey found plenty of positives in the Jaguars’ 31-6 win over Austin High School of Decatur in a jamboree game Aug. 19.
Despite the positives, Lindsey knows there’s a big gap between a jamboree win and a successful run to the playoffs in the gauntlet known as Alabama High School Athletic Class 6A, Region 6.
Spain Park scored four touchdowns in the varsity portion of the scrimmage, but Lindsey expected more from his offensive unit.
“We looked good on one drive and bad on the next,” Lindsey said. “We sputtered on offense. We’ve got to cut down on the mental errors.”
Running back Kevron McMillan led the Jaguars with two rushing touchdowns in the jamboree.
Nick Mullens completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Kahn and Mario Kinnion returned an interception 40 yards for a score in the jamboree.
Jake Hoffman capped the scoring for the Jaguars with a field goal.
Despite a few problems on offense, Lindsey was pleased with the defensive unit for holding Austin to only six points.
“I though we played really well on defense,” Lindsey said. “We flew around the ball.”
